Rowan, the daughter of actress Brooke Shields, has been open about her Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis, bringing awareness to the condition by sharing photos with her Dexcom patch visible. Brooke recalls feeling helpless initially as they were unsure of what the future would hold. At just 14 years old, Rowan had to become autonomous with administering insulin to herself multiple times a day, prompting a quick maturation process.
Challenges Faced
Rowan, now 21 and a senior at Wake Forest University, was diagnosed at the age of 14 after experiencing rapid weight loss, constant urination, deteriorating eyesight, and a severe toe infection – all classic symptoms of undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes. While she sometimes wishes she had been diagnosed earlier to avoid knowing a life without the condition, she has learned to manage it effectively. It has become a 24/7 job for her, but she has adapted her lifestyle around it.
The Dexcom patch, which sends readings to a smartphone app, has been instrumental in Brooke’s peace of mind. Not only does it allow Rowan to monitor her own condition, but it also enables her mom and close family to keep track of her readings without constantly nagging her. Brooke is also the mother of Grier, who recently started as a freshman at Wake Forest University. Grier paid a sentimental tribute to her mother by wearing the same dress Brooke wore at her wedding to Andre Agassi in 1997.
Brooke shares Rowan and Grier with her husband, Chris Henchy, a successful television writer and producer. Despite the challenges that come with managing Type 1 Diabetes, the family has shown resilience and adaptability in supporting Rowan through her diagnosis. The experience has brought them closer together and has highlighted the importance of mental and emotional strength in overcoming life-changing circumstances.
