The 2024 ESPYS have recently announced Prince Harry as the recipient of the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service. This honor is bestowed upon individuals who have made a significant impact through their dedication to serving others. Prince Harry was selected for his remarkable work with the Invictus Games, an international sporting event that brings together wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women from around the world. His tireless efforts in creating a platform to support and empower veterans have not gone unnoticed.
Prince Harry’s connection to sports and his commitment to serving others reflect the legacy of former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman. After serving in the British Armed Forces for 10 years, including two tours of duty in Afghanistan, Prince Harry founded The Invictus Games Foundation. This foundation has provided a platform for veterans to showcase their resilience, courage, and determination through the power of sport. The Games have transcended borders and impacted lives on a global scale, bringing together competitors from 23 nations.
Past recipients of the Pat Tillman Award for Service include notable figures such as England soccer star Marcus Rashford, retired Army Sergeant Gretchen Evans, and the Buffalo Bills Training Staff. The ESPYS have also announced other honorees for the 2024 event, including Steve Gleason and Dawn Staley. Steve Gleason, a former NFL player diagnosed with ALS, will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, while Dawn Staley, an American basketball coach, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
The ESPYS, also known as the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, recognize individual and team athletic achievements from the past year. The event, which was first held in 1993, aims to raise awareness and funds for cancer research through the V Foundation. Over the past 31 years, ESPN has helped raise more than $200 million for this cause. The ESPYS will be held in Los Angeles this year, with Serena Williams hosting the annual awards show.
