Christina Applegate Opens Up About Living with Multiple Sclerosis

During a recent interview on Good Morning America with Robin Roberts, Christina Applegate shared a raw and honest glimpse into the challenges she faces while living with multiple sclerosis (MS). At 52 years old, attending public events like the 2024 Emmy Awards has become an immense struggle for Christina, who bravely confronts the harsh realities of her condition each day. Describing her experience at the Emmy Awards ceremony, where she presented the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Christina revealed how overwhelming it was for her. Despite feeling like she had blacked out during the event, the warm reception and standing ovation from the audience provided her with a fleeting moment of comfort in the midst of her ongoing struggles.

Acknowledging the difficulties she faces on a daily basis, Christina expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support she receives from those around her. She shared, “I live kind of in hell… It’s a little difficult just for my system, but of course, the support is wonderful, and I’m really grateful.” Even with the challenges she encounters, Christina finds solace in the encouragement and love she receives from others. Despite the seriousness of her condition, Christina humorously noted the irony of receiving a standing ovation, jokingly saying, “You’re totally shaming disability by standing up, it’s fine!” Her ability to find humor in challenging situations serves as a testament to her strength and resilience.

Reflecting on the onset of her symptoms at the age of 40, Christina opened up about the progressive nature of MS and the uncertainties it brings regarding her future. She candidly admitted, “This is a progressive disease. I don’t know if I’m going to get worse.” The limitations imposed by the disease have forced Christina to come to terms with the adjustments she must make in her daily life, including relying on assistance from others for tasks she once took for granted. The stark reality of her situation hit home when she shared, “There are just certain things that people take for granted in their lives that I took for granted. Going down the stairs, carrying things – you can’t do that anymore. It… sucks.”

Christina’s diagnosis of MS just before the production of the final season of Dead to Me in 2021 added unexpected obstacles to her professional life. The physical effects of the disease, including weight gain from medication and immobility, presented challenges that impacted her acting career. Despite the uncertainties she faces, Christina expressed admiration for her co-star, Linda Cardellini, whom she described as the greatest actress she has ever worked with. While she acknowledged that she may not work on camera again, Christina expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share the screen with someone she holds in high regard.

Christina Applegate’s candid interview sheds light on the struggles she faces while living with multiple sclerosis. Her openness about the physical and emotional challenges she navigates serves as an inspiration to others dealing with similar conditions.
